available. The hotel room rates (and airfares) in Rio de Janeiro are the most expensive during Brazil's summer especially around New Year's and Carnival. Rio is slightly north of the Tropic of Capricorn and approximately 1500 miles south of the equator so it has mild winters ... comparable to summers at the Southern California coast with highs generally in the mid-70's F (mid-20's C). So the low season can still be an opportune time to visit and explore Rio and Northeast Brazil more cheaply and less crowded while still being able to take advantage of the beaches and the outdoors. Additionally, Rio hotel room rates are generally less expensive at hotels not located on the beachfront at Copacabana and Ipanema/Leblon and less at hotels located in Botafogo, Flamengo, and Downtown (See our Rio Hotel Directory for these hotels). |
